Herd Softball Closes February with Trip to Liberty

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall Softball has one more weekend on the road before returning to Dot Hicks Field for Home Opening Day on Friday, Mar. 6. The Herd travels to Liberty University to face the Flames, coming off a 50-win season and NCAA Super Regional appearance.    

The two sides will be joined by UConn and Radford with the Herd playing in four games across two days in Lynchburg.

Coach Morgan Zerkle

  • Head Coach Morgan Zerkle enters her 3rd season as head coach at her alma mater. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017). 
  • Marshall vaulted up to a 2nd place finish in the Sun Belt Conference in season two under Zerkle. The Herd improved its win total by six games with five more SBC victories from the season prior.
  • Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - plays professionally for the AUSL's Chicago Bandits. She is also on the active Team USA Softball roster. 

MARSHALL NOTES

  • Marshall ranks 5th in NCAA DI with 32 home runs. Marshall has three of the top four home run hitters in the Sun Belt Conference with Sydni Burko (1st-8), Bella Gerlach (T-2nd-7), and Ava Blake (4th-6).
  • The Herd claimed two road victories over (RV) Charlotte last weekend in North Carolina. Junior pitcher Jules King appeared in all five of the Herd's games, including getting the save in the first win over the 49ers and the win in relief in Saturday's contest against the hosts. 
  • MU returns home to Dot Hicks Field after the Liberty Invitational, hosting Marshall March Madness with Akron, Canisius, and Howard coming to Huntington. 

ABOUT UCONN

  • UConn is 3-11 this season after being added as a late addition to the JoAnn Graf Classic in Tallahassee the opening weekend of the season. The defending Big East Champions open conference play next weekend.
  • Marshall won the season opener against the Huskies, 10-1. The all-time series is tied at two wins apiece.

ABOUT LIBERTY

  • Liberty will be the Herd's seventh NCAA Tournament opponent from last season. The Flames are the third (Florida, Florida State) foe which advanced to last year's Super Regionals.
  • Marshall leads the all-time series, 12-8 but are seeking its first win against Liberty since 2016.

ABOUT RADFORD

  • Radford is 2-8 to start 2026. The Highlanders won 30 games and the Big South regular season title last season.
  • Marshall swept a doubleheader last season against Radford and leads the all-time series, 15-2.
