HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – David Walsh, a quarterback for the Young Thundering Herd, will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2026 Marshall Spring Fountain Ceremony.
The ceremony takes place at 11:30 a.m. on April 11 at the Marshall Memorial Fountain, located outside of the Marshall Memorial Student Center.
The annual Spring Fountain Ceremony leads into the 2026 Marshall Football Spring Game, which will start at 3 p.m. that day.
Fans wishing to attend the ceremony & the game can take advantage of the West Lot at Joan C. Edwards Stadium opening at 9 a.m. on April 11. Parking for the day is $20.
Those doing so can then walk over through campus to attend the Marshall Spring Fountain Ceremony before heading back to Joan C. Edwards Stadium for tailgating prior to the Spring Game.
Tickets for the 2026 Spring Game are $5 and can be purchased HERE.
Those attended the 2026 Marshall Fountain Ceremony will hear from Walsh, who came to Marshall as a high school quarterback from Suffolk, Va., prior to the 1970 season and became a quarterback for the Young Thundering Herd in the 1971 season following the 1970 Marshall Plane Crash that killed all 75 persons aboard Southern Airways Flight 932.
Walsh competed for the Marshall freshman team in 1970 – a team that was essentially the scout team for the varsity team, as NCAA rules did not allow freshmen to travel. He was recruited to Marshall by the late Rick Tolley, who perished in the Nov. 14, 1970 crash, but stayed on to letter as a quarterback for new coach Jack Lengyel as part of the Young Thundering Herd from 1971-73.Â
Following his playing career with Marshall, Walsh continued his presence as a fixture in the Marshall University and Tri-State sports scene as a journalist for The Herald-Dispatch and HD Media for more than 50 years.Â
Walsh has since retired from HD Media, but is still involved heavily in his sportswriting career, covering high school and Marshall University events as a freelancer while serving as a key ambassador for the memory of the 1970 Marshall team, sharing the perspectives of a teammate during that tragic time while keeping the memories of his teammates alive.
Gates for the 2026 Spring Game will open at 2 p.m. and action will get underway with a 3 p.m. kickoff in which the first half is a live scrimmage and the second half is set up as a Fan Day for those in attendance.
