Marshall Women's Basketball Defeats UMBC, 66-53 in WNIT Second Round

3/23/2026 8:34:00 PM | Women's Basketball

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Women's Basketball returned to the court in style, powering past UMBC 66-53 in the WNIT Second Round on Monday night at the Cam Henderson Center. The Herd improved to 24-9 and snapped a two-game skid with a gritty, defensive showing to secure its spot in the tournament's third round.

Timaya Lewis-Eutsey led the Herd once again, pouring in a game-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting and adding six assists, three blocks and two steals. Marshall's defense was relentless throughout the night, holding UMBC to 36.8% shooting and piling up 11 blocks as a team.

The opening quarter saw both teams locked at 12, but the Herd surged late in the second quarter to take a 26-23 halftime lead, sparked by aggressive play on both ends.

The third quarter proved decisive as Marshall outscored UMBC 20-14, pushing the margin to nine entering the final period. Timberlynn Yeast chipped in 11 points and six rebounds, while Leyocha Marigney anchored the interior with five points, six boards and three blocks. The Herd capitalized on UMBC's miscues, turning 17 turnovers into 19 points. Marshall controlled the paint with a 28-22 edge in points inside and a 36-31 advantage on the glass.

Marshall maintained composure as the game wore on, maintaining a double-digit lead for much of the fourth quarter and never letting the Retrievers threaten down the stretch. The Herd's balanced offense saw seven different players score, and the team shot 46.9% from the field while limiting the Retrievers to just five made free throws all night.
