Herd’s Olivia Kochan, Madison Borders Finish In Top-10 At Colonel Classic

Kochan fires day’s only round-under-par to finish 5th; Borders earns 9th
RICHMOND, Ky. – Marshall Women's Golf finished strong in its final day at the Colonel Classic, boasting of a pair of players in the top-10 at event's end at The University Club at Arlington on Tuesday.
Senior Olivia Kochan was the only participant in the entire 63-player field to end the final round under par to vault into a 5th place finish while junior Madison Borders also stayed steady on the afternoon to end with a T-9 finish.
"I'm really proud of the fight I saw this week from everyone in some really tough conditions," Marshall Women's Golf coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "Olivia and Madison really stepped up when we needed them to do so."
Kochan's round of 1-under par was the lone participant to see red on a windy afternoon that caused issue for many golfers at The University Club at Arlington.
The senior from Dallas, Texas limited her mistakes and took advantage of the course's par-5s to stay below par, which vaulted her 12 places up the standings from her day one finish.
Kochan birdied her fourth hole of the day – the par-5 9th hole – to get the day started well and followed with birdies at Nos. 13 and 17. After a bogey on No. 18, Kochan finished with five straight pars to end the day with a 71.
Borders stayed steady throughout the difficult tournament, which forced all participants into some high numbers. The junior from Bardstown, Kentucky, made a return to central Kentucky a successful one, firing a final day 4-over 76, which was one of the day's top-10 rounds among competitors.
On the first day, the top round went to Taylor Sargent, who stayed steady and used birdies on Holes No. 2 and 4 to shoot a 3-undr 75 while competing as an individual.
As a team, Marshall finished in fourth place in the 10-team event. Youngstown State edged host Eastern Kentucky by one stroke to win the team portion.
