Herd Athletes Set Personal Bests on Day 1 at Virginia Challenge

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Marshall Track & Field opened the Virginia Challenge with a strong start on Day 1 at Lannigan Field. Led by standout performances from Lara Check, Lakesha Smith, and Markayla Moore on the women's side, while the Herd saw athletes including Maxton Sowers set personal-bests/
Track Events
In the women's 100 meters prelims, Emma Henry led seven Marshall entries with a season-best 11.85 to finish 12th overall. Freshman Eric Reynolds finished 10th with a time of 10.72. In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Myah Boze (1:03.00), Channie Jefferson (1:03.53) and Azurie Garrett (1:04.88) finished within two seconds of each other. In the mile, Ellie Hosaflook (4:46.53, PB) led the Herd women and Maxton Sowers finished 10th with a program-best time (since 2023) of 3:49.21. Asha Bora and Brady Dawkins, Clay Kelly, and Garrett Ferguson raced the late-night 10K.
Field Events
Lara Check equaled her personal best in the women's long jump, leaping 6.24 meters to claim 5th in a field of 39 competitors. Lakesha Smith posted a new personal best of 6.02 meters, and claim a spot in the SBC Top-8. In the hammer throw, Markayla Moore led Marshall with a 10th-place finish at 54.93 meters (180-2). In the shot put, Moore added a 16th-place finish at 14.20 meters and SaMone Whitt set a new personal best at 13.27 meters for 25th. Gabriel Urraca's PR of 17.16 meters finished 15th. Alycia Rivera matched her season best in the high jump at 1.62 meters, finishing 13th.
