Herd Softball Drops Contest to JMU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall could not get over the hump in a 5-3 loss Friday evening to JMU. Four of the five runs the Herd (37-15, 17-6 SBC) gave up came with two outs. MU also left eight on base, including twice stranding the bases loaded.
The Herd fell behind early but tied things in the 4th on a two-run Paige Simpson home run. The first of the season for Simpson makes 10 Marshall players to have hit a home run in 2026.
But JMU responded with three in the 5th, all with two outs. The Herd turned to Paige Maynard in relief, who kept the Dukes off the board over the final 2.1 of the game.
Tia Titi's RBI bases-loaded walk got the Herd within two but the team found itself unable to draw closer.
Marshall will enter the final day of the regular season a half-game behind ULM for the league's lead. The Warhawks were rained out Friday and will have a doubleheader Saturday.
Saturday will also be Senior Day for the Herd. Marshall's graduates, especially Maynard, Simpson and Abby Darnley will be honored prior to the contest. Friday was a special day for Darnley, being named the program's annual Emileigh Cooper Warrior Award recipient.
"I am super honored to get this award," said Darnley. "I am proud that my teammates think that much of me and I am a Warrior for them. I have been here the past four years and I know how much of an honor it is to have this award. We truly do play with fire like Emileigh Cooper, we play everyday for her and the 75."
"I think Athletics' in general at Marshall, just starting with the 75 for the program as a whole and our community is so based on that foundation," said Darnley. "For softball, Emileigh Cooper, just playing for her every day. It makes our team collectively stronger playing for something greater than ourselves and I think that is why we have so much fire and I think that is why we are going to come back and play even harder tomorrow."
