Larry Tweel Family Concourse Unveiled At Joan C. Edwards Stadium

Stadium’s West concourse named for family of former Big Green President
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – There was something a little different for Larry Tweel and his family when they walked into Joan C. Edwards Stadium for Saturday's win over Middle Tennessee.
As he entered the stadium to watch the Thundering Herd's 28-26 win over the Blue Raiders, he did so through a concourse bearing his family's name.
When patrons at Marshall Athletics events at Joan C. Edwards Stadium walk through the West side of the stadium, they will be entering the Larry Tweel Family Concourse.
"It just warmed the heart of my family to see the Tweel Family name up there," Tweel said. "My Dad, Jim, was very important to this community and my mother Sally helped quite a few clubs and organizations at Marshall and was a very giving person. I'm very proud that we were able to make the contribution to have the sign put up and I'm especially proud of being Jim and Sally Tweel's son because they were great parents and great leaders within our community."
The naming of the concourse was made possible through a substantial financial gift that not only preserves the legacy of the Tweel Family's connection to Marshall, but helps Marshall Athletics in its "Taking Care of the House" initiative started by Vice President and Director of Athletics Gerald J. Harrison.
"Larry Tweel and his family have been long-time members of the Big Green and steadfast supporters of Marshall Athletics," Harrison said. "They consistently rally to the call of The Herd, and we are proud to recognize their significant contributions by naming the West Concourse in honor of the Tweel Family. Their generosity will further our efforts to 'Take Care of the House' and enhance the student-athlete experience. We are incredibly grateful for their commitment to Marshall. It is a great day to run with The Herd!"
The connection between the Tweel Family and Marshall University is a personal one with Larry's wife Cheryl and son Brad having graduated from Marshall and the family having a legacy of charitable works for the university and athletics programs that they love.
"The Tweel Family is no stranger to fundraising initiatives for the Big Green and Marshall Athletics," said Teddy Kluemper III, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Championship Resources and Executive Director of the Big Green. "Larry, Cheryl and Brad have consistently answered the calls to support with major gifts to the Vision and All 'M' campaigns, and now to the 'Taking Care of the House' Campaign. The naming of the concourse will serve as a permanent reminder of the family's unwavering support for our program. It was an honor to facilitate their gift and we are proud that thousands of fans will walk in each football gameday and see what the Tweel Family means to Marshall Athletics."
As Larry put it, Marshall Athletics has remained a constant source of pride and fun for his family for decades, bringing them closer through the years as they attend events and take trips to cheer on the Herd.
The Tweel Family travel list for Herd games includes historic events such as men's basketball's NIT run in 1967 when George Stone's 46-point performance helped the Herd advance to the Final Four and numerous football trips that includes wins at Clemson and South Carolina, along with trips to Tennessee and – most recently – Penn State.
Larry Tweel said the thing he loves the most about Marshall Athletics is the deep-rooted connection to the community and how the community, university and city build off each other.
When Marshall is successful, Huntington is successful, too.
"Marshall University is one of the most – if not the most – important economic engines for the city of Huntington," Tweel said. "That's why we need to support it on athletic and academic sides as much as possible."
This is not the first time that the Tweel Family has stepped to the forefront to assist Marshall with a capital fundraising campaign, having been part of several projects to enhance Marshall's facilities.
Most recently, Larry and Cheryl Tweel made a charitable gift to Marshall Athletics to designate the head coach's office within the Alex Lawrence Clubhouse at Jack Cook Field as the 'Jack Cook Marshall Baseball Head Coach's Office' in honor of the baseball field's namesakes.
That gift had a personal meaning to Larry Tweel, who was coached by Jack Cook in basketball at Huntington's Miller Elementary and Cammack Junior High Schools before also playing baseball for Cook at the old Huntington High School.
Tweel said the sentiment of charitable gifts speaks to Marshall's success and community connection – one that goes well beyond the dollars-and-cents aspect.
"A lot of our success has to do with the community and the support the community gives the team and coaches," Tweel said. "It isn't always how much money you give, but how much of your heart that you give to the players and coaches."
That is what has driven Tweel to be an active member within the Marshall University and Marshall Athletics realm.
Tweel has served as the Big Green Scholarship Foundation President and also been active with the Marshall Foundation and also served on the board to select Yeager Scholars.
Marshall University and Marshall Athletics have been part of his entire life and he plans on continuing to support the Herd to continue its pathway to success.
"Marshall has meant a lot to me and my family," Tweel said. "I've been treated well by the Big Green and my wife, my son, my family – we just all love Marshall. Win, lose or draw, the Tweel Family is going to be behind Marshall Athletics."
