MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (7-4) registered its second consecutive sweep (25-19, 25-19, 25-20) over the Morehead State Eagles on Saturday in Morehead, Kentucky.

"Great weekend for us to wrap up non-conference play," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "Over these first four weekends, we've been able to see so many people step up in big moments and find ways to make an impact. That's a testament to our leadership committee, the work they've put in throughout training, and the trust we continue to build within this group."

Maddie Smith had a match-high 15 kills and .542 hitting percentage with Emma Barnett joining her in double-figure kills at 10. Kahea Carvalho contributed 29 assists with Emma Sayre adding 11 digs.

"Today, we came in, watched some film from last night, and made some defensive adjustments that I thought helped us out tremendously today. We were able to utilize all three of our liberos today in different points of the match and they showed up and did their job," Stout said. "Offensively, we were swinging with confidence, and Kahea did a great job distributing the ball effectively and keeping our offense in a rhythm. We were also able to serve tough and keep Morehead out of system, which allowed us to get quality digs and transition into our offensive flow."

The Herd never trailed the Eagles in the first set. MU picked up its largest lead of the contest at six points (13-7) on a Barnett kill. Although Morehead State battled back to tie the contest at 15-15, Marshall rattled off 10 of the final 14 points to close out the opening frame 25-19 on back-to-back kills by Barnett.

The second saw the two sides trade leads and points as the score sat deadlocked at 12-12. However, the Herd used a 4-1 run that had three MSU errors and a Smith kill to take a 16-13 advantage and not trail the rest of the set. Marae Reilly finished used one her nine kills in the match to seal the second 25-19 and give MU a 2-0 lead.

The third set started much like the second with the Eagles and Herd trading rallies as they sat tied 14-14. However, Marshall used kills from Barnett and Reilly to jump on top of Morehead State for good. Beatrice Ciccarelli combined with Carvalho and Smith on a pair of blocks to close out the set 25-20 and finish the sweep.

"This team is so much fun to coach and watch," Stout said. "There's a lot to be proud of through these first four weekends, and I'm excited to enjoy this with them while continuing to grow and prepare for what's ahead. Now, we turn our focus to SBC play. We're excited to be back home in Huntington next week and get prepped for Georgia State."
