HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (8-4, 1-0) battled back for a 3-2 (18-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 16-14) win to open Sun Belt Conference action on Thursday with a win over Georgia State.

"I'm really proud of the group," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "To be able to get a reverse sweep, in front of this crowd with this group is everything. I'm really proud of our fight and how we turned our mindset around."

Maddie Smith led the way with 15 kills and registered 12 digs for a double-double. Carys Kerr picked up 10 kills with just three errors on 27 attacks and a .259 hitting percentage. Kerr was in on the final three points to help the Herd win the fifth set.

Kahea Carvalho dished out 31 assists with Emma Barnett and Emma Sayre playing hard on defense with 21 digs each. Beatrice Ciccarelli registered a team-best six blocks.

After falling wire-to-wire in set one 25-18 and dropping set two 25-19, the Herd found itself down 2-0 to the Panthers.

The two sides were heated in a back-and-forth battle to open the third with score tied 7-7 through the first 14 points. However, MU benefitted from three GSU attacking errors, a pair of Kerr kills and a Smith service ace for a 6-0 run and to take a 13-7 advantage. Marshall eventually extended its lead to a set-high eight at 17-9 on a kill by Marae Reilly and cruised to a 25-19 set win.

In a fourth set that saw six ties and six score changes, the Herd held an 11-7 lead after a Logan Henderson kill. The Panthers fought back taking six of the next eight points to tie the game at 13-13. Down the stretch Smith registered a team-high three points and the eventual final kill of the set to force a deciding fifth with a 25-21 win.

After trailing by as many as four points (12-8), Marshall battled back, but saw itself facing match point at 14-13. Kerr stepped up and joined Ciccarelli for a block along with registering the final two kills to complete the reverse sweep and comeback to take the match.
