Herd Women’s Soccer Breaks Through for Conference Road Victory at Troy

TROY, Ala. - Marshall Women's Soccer (5-2-3, 1-0-1 SBC) broke through with goals in the 66th and 70th minutes to power past Troy (1-7-1, 0-2-0) on the road Thursday evening, 2-1.
After a Trojan first half red card put the Herd up a player for the last hour of the match, Head Coach Rafa Simoes' side had 20 shots, with Larissa Ozorio's strike from distance finally breaking the deadlock.

A Delfina Lombardi finish less than five minutes later turned into the match-winner for Marshall.

"I'm really proud of this group and the way we continue to compete in conference play," said Coach Simoes. "Larissa has been with us for a long time, and to see her step up and get us on the board with that first goal was really special. I'm also really proud of our captain, Madison Townes, for her performance and for creating the assist on Delfina's goal. Those moments are a reflection of the leadership and commitment we have within this team."
Ozorio's goal was her first of the year, becoming Marshall's ninth player to register a goal this season. The Lombardi goal delivered with assists from Nerea Munoz and Madison Townes was the Argentina native's second of the year.
Defensively, Emma Durand earned another victory in net. The junior goalkeeper from Angers, France remained active despite the extra player advantage for Marshall, making four saves.
The win sets up Marshall for a massive Sunday home contest against JMU. Kickoff between the two unbeaten sides in league play is set for 3 p.m. from Hoops Family Field. For tickets to the conference showdown, click HERE.
"We're playing really well in conference play, and we're still undefeated, but we know there is a lot of work ahead of us," added Coach Simoes. "We're going to enjoy this result tonight, but our focus now immediately turns to JMU."
"We're excited to be back home on Sunday, and we need our Herd fans behind us. We're getting very close to breaking our attendance record, and with the doubleheader, we're asking our fans to come out, pack the Vet, and help create an incredible atmosphere for our team. We're looking forward to seeing everyone there."
