Herd Women’s Soccer Lands Signature Victory Over JMU, 2-1

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall Women's Soccer (6-2-3, 2-0-1 SBC) scored a pair of first half goals to sink the SBC Preseason favorites, JMU, 2-1. Set piece goals by Geovanna Souza and Maria Chaves in the 20th and 23rd minutes were enough for the Herd - who are in a three-way tie for the league lead after Matchday 3.
The signature victory for Head Coach Rafa Simoes and Marshall is the program's first win over JMU since joining the league in 2022.

"Being able to put together a performance against a team [like JMU] and passing them on the table and have a week to prepare for Georgia Southern at home next week is everything we could ask for," said Coach Simoes. "The Herd supporters were amazing, they carried us in a difficult match. But this group is made of it, we knew they could do this performance. I am so proud of how we played the first half and we knew how to suffer in the second half. We stayed tough and consistent. This is just a proud day, one of my proudest days as a coach."
The set piece magic was fitting for Marshall, the Herd now has eight from corner kicks, penalty kicks, and now a free kick after the Herd cashed in on Souza's header delivered in Wiktoria Mikrut's cross to open the scoring.
Souza provided Maria Chaves with the match-winning assist from the corner four minutes later.
The Dukes would get one back on Ginny Lackey's goal. The SBC Preseason Player of the Year has six this season. But the Herd saw the match out from there, with goalkeeper Emma Durand making two saves.
Marshall now has a week off before returning to Hoops Family Field next Sunday, Oct. 4 to face Georgia Southern. For tickets to the conference showdown, click HERE.
