Lazar Milinkovic enters his fifth season as an assistant coach with the Marshall women’s basketball team after being hired in July of 2016 and works with the guards. He was also named Recruiting Coordinator in August of 2019. It is his second tour with the Herd after serving as a graduate assistant for two years (2012-14).
Milinkovic helped guide the Herd to a big turnaround in 2018-19 with an 8-win improvement from the 2017-18 season. Marshall was predicted to finish 13th in the Conference USA preseason polls and the Herd went out and won 10 league games to finish sixth in the standings. The 10 wins in conference play were the most in program history since Marshall moved into C-USA (2005-06). The Herd racked up 17 wins overall for the year including a first round win in the WBI over Davidson. It was just the fourth postseason berth in program history and the team’s first postseason tournament win since 2015 in the WBI.
In 2018-19, Marshall improved in every aspect of the game finishing the year fifth in C-USA in points per game (67.3), second in three-pointers made per game (8.4) and led the conference in three-pointers made per game in league play (8.9). The defense improved as well going from 13th in the conference in field goal percentage allowed in 2017-18 to fifth in 2018-19.
Milinkovic’s work with the Marshall backcourt led to a tandem of senior guards leading the way in Shayna Gore and Taylor Porter. Gore scored a career-high 20.1 points per game and her 642 total points was good for fourth-best in a season in Herd history. She also broke her own team record for most three’s made in a season with 96. Gore capped off her career with the third most points in team history (2,081) and the all-time leader in 3-pointers made with 303 more than twice the previous record (146). Gore was named First Team All-Conference USA. While working with coach Milinkovic, Gore saw her scoring average improve every season of her career. As a freshman in 2015-16, Gore averaged 10.8 points per game. Then in 2016-17, Milinkovic’s first season back with the Herd, Gore averaged 17.5 per game and then 19.6 per game her junior year.
Porter returned from missing most of the 2017-18 season due to injury to average 12.3 points per game in 2018-19 and was twice named Conference USA Player of the Week. The second time she was named player of the week came after an incredible senior day performance when Porter set the team record for most three-pointers made in a game with 10 in the win over FIU.
Lazar Milinkovic, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, was an assistant coach for Morehead State for two seasons. In 2015-16, he helped mentor Almesha Jones, who was named first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference after finishing as the program’s all-time leader in assists (598) and second in steals (250).
Milinkovic served two seasons (2012-13 and 2013-14) as a graduate assistant at Marshall. He worked with 15 student-athletes who were named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Milinkovic mentored Shay Weaver, who set the school single-season three-point record in 2012-13, and two others who rank on Marshall's top-10 single-season three-point list.
Milinkovic served as an assistant boy's coach at Huntington (W.Va.) St. Joseph Prep School in 2010-11 and 2011-12. He coached Andrew Wiggins a former All-American as a freshman at Kansas, who is currently playing in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors. While he was on staff, the program garnered top-five national rankings in USA Today, Sports Illustrated and Max Preps.
Prior to his time in Huntington, Milinkovic spent two seasons (2008-09 and 2009-10) as a boy's assistant coach at Mountain State Academy, a prep school in Beckley, W.Va. He coached Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 selection in the 2013 NBA Draft. The program advanced to the ESPN National High School Invitational both seasons. He concluded his playing career with one season (2007-08) at the academy, where he propelled the team to a 37-5 mark.
Milinkovic has been a head coach at the AAU level, leading the Key Players from Huntington and Beckley Wizards.
He earned a bachelor's degree in applied management from Ohio University in 2012 and received his master's degree in adult education from Marshall in 2014.
