Ross Holland’s journey in soccer is defined by passion, purpose, and perseverance — qualities that have guided him from England’s Premier League pitches to shaping the next generation of athletes in West Virginia.
A native of Gateshead, England, Ross began his career with Sunderland AFC, advancing to its U-23 team and helping the club’s U-18 squad capture the Premier League title in 2013. He went on to play collegiately at the University of Charleston, where his leadership and determination helped bring home the 2017 NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer National Championship.
Following his playing career, Ross found his calling in coaching — blending his competitive spirit with a genuine dedication to athlete development. He joined the West Virginia University men’s soccer coaching staff in 2021, serving as an assistant coach. In this role, he assists with daily training, game preparation, and the implementation of advanced data, film, and technology strategies. Ross was part of WVU’s historic 2021 and 2023 campaign, helping guide the Mountaineers to a 12-3-6 (2021) and 17-3-4 (2023) record, an NCAA Elite 8 and final 4 appearance, and the highest final ranking in program history.
Beyond collegiate athletics, Ross remains a pillar in the community, coaching youth soccer during the college off-season — including his son’s travel team — and inspiring young players to chase their dreams with discipline and heart. His philosophy extends beyond winning matches; it’s about developing resilient athletes and strong individuals whose success endures long after the final whistle.
Ross holds a UEFA ‘B’ coaching license. He and his wife, Sydney, now reside in Putnam County, West Virginia, with their two children, Jordan and Shelby.
