Possibly the best athlete ever produced by the state of West Virginia, Randy Moss rewrote the Marshall football record book in his two seasons of competition for the Thundering Herd and kept on doing the same thing throughout his career as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. The Rand, W.Va., native burst onto the Marshall scene in 1996, leading the Herd to a 15-0 record and NCAA Division I-AA national title by scoring 29 touchdowns (28 receiving, 1 rushing), breaking the school scoring record set 56 years earlier by College Football Hall of Famer Jackie Hunt. Moss caught 25 more TD passes the following season as he won the Biletnikoff and Warfield Awards as college football’s top receiver and was invited to New York’s Downtown Athletic Club as a Heisman Trophy Award finalist.
Moss also ran for Marshall at the 1996 Southern Conference Track and Field Championships and won league titles in the 60- and 100-meter sprints. The first-round selection of the Minnesota Vikings in the 1998 NFL Draft, Moss went on to be selected for six Pro Bowls during a 16-year NFL career in which he caught 982 passes for 15,292 yards and 156 touchdowns. Moss was the West Virginia high school football Player of the Year in 1994 and the state basketball Player of the Year in 1994 and 1995. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
