Marshall Downs Central Michigan In Four Games
10/12/2001
The Marshall University volleyball team (4-11, 2-5 MAC) used impressive performances by Isabelle Anderer (Sinsheim, Germany) and Heidi Kuethe (Normal, Ill.) to upend the Chippewas from Central Michigan (4-11, 0-8 MAC) in four games, 25-30, 30-21, 30-24, and 30-27. The win ended a six game conference losing streak for the Herd, who last posted a win in conference play on September 21st vs. Buffalo at the Henderson Center.
?I think it was the absolute best team effort we?ve had all year,? said Marshall head coach Steffi Legall. ?I think our seniors really came through in the first two games with Kristin Bailey (Indianapolis, Ind.) starting. I want to give her a lot of credit for preparing the team for coming out ready to play today.?
Central Michigan had no answer for Anderrer and Kuethe. Anderer had 24 kills in 52 attempts with only six errors (.346 hitting percentage), while Kuethe blistered the Chippewas with 12 kills in only 20 total attempts.
Things looked bleak early for Marshall when Cenral Michigan took an early one game to none lead to start the game, riding the wave of a .410 hitting percentage. The Chippewas had 19 kills in 39 attempts, while committing only three errors. For the next three games, however, the roles were reversed, as the Herd tallied hitting percentages of .424, .357, and .286, respectively, to take control of the match.
Senior Kristin Bailey garnered a season-high 27 assists in the first two games, while sophomore Andrea Kastein (Pittsburgh, Pa.) helped the hosts with 35 assists of her own.
Northern Illinois is next up for the Herd, who present the Herd a challenge as they try to climb up the MAC standings. Coach Legall thinks her team will be ready for the Huskies. ?We?ll go in with more confidence and determiniation. Northern Illinois is a good volleyball team and I think our girls will go in prepared to play a good match.?
That game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Henderson Center.
