Volleyball Defeats Chippewas
10/27/2001
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.? The Marshall University volleyball team defeated Central Michigan, Friday evening in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., 3-2.
The Herd was up 2-0 going in to the third match, but the Chippewas rallied back and tied the match at two all. Marshall pulled the victory out in the fifth game, 15-12.
?It was very nice to win in five on the road,? said head coach Steffi Legall. ?That is something that we have not been very successful doing. We started out with a comfortable 2-0 lead, but Central stepped up their defense and we had to counter that. It was great to see our players come through in the deciding match with poise and very aggressive offense.?
Sophomore Tracey King (sophomore/Miami, Fla.) led the Herd with 20 kills and 14 digs. King also finished the evening with 7 block solos. Grace Jones (junior, Lakeland, Fla.) also helped the Herd out with 17 kills, 4 defensive digs and 1 block solo.
?We had great defense and blocking and in tonight?s match,? said Legall. ?You also have to give Tracey and Grace credit for nice offense throughout the whole match.?
The Herd will travel on Saturday to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on Western Michigan (6-5 MAC).
?We are certainly looking for another win against Western Michigan on Saturday, but we will defineatly take the win we?ve got,? Legall said.
The Herd now moves to 5-15 overall and 3-8 in Mid-American Conference competition.
