Men's Soccer Cruises Past Marietta 6-0

Huntington, W.Va.-The Marshall University men?s soccer team stopped a three game losing streak today by defeating Marietta College 6-0 today in action at Sam Hood Field.
?We needed to get back on track,? head coach Bob Gray said. ?We were able to play a lot of guys today and work on our execution. It was good to see several players get involved in the action. Hopefully, we can carry this momentum into the final game of the regular season and into the conference tournament.?
Chris Varnado scored the game-winning goal for the Thundering Herd only minutes into the match. Off a pass from Brent Sobczak and Wayne Bennett in the third minute, Varnado scored on a blast from 15 yards out for his first goal of the season.
Byron Carmichael extended the lead in the sixth minute, putting a header in off a pass from Robert Ngumire.
Ngumire made the score 3-0 in the 19th minute when he put a shot into the upper-left hand corner of the net. Chris Mellecker and Firas Al-Sammarraie assisted on the goal.
Varnado scored his second goal of the game in the 33rd minute off a pass from Steve Spaulding and Rob Clouse to make the score 4-0 heading into halftime.
The Herd did not let up in the second half. Sobczak scored in the 56th minute of the match when he put a one-timer from Clouse past the goalkeeper.
Dallas Tennant finished the scoring in the 74th minute when he headed a pass from Bennett into the lower left-hand corner of the goal.
Matt Salmon and Jeremy Williams split time in goal in recording the shutout victory for Marshall.
Marshall outshot the Pioneers 34-2 during the match. Marietta did not record a shot on goal.
Marshall will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1:00 p.m. against Mount St. Mary?s at Sam Hood Field. The Senior Day match is the last contest of the regular season for the Thundering Herd. The Mid-American Conference tournament will follow on the weekend of November 9, 2001. Marshall has secured the third seed in the tournament and time and opponent will be determined this week.
