HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall University?s Byron Carmichael (Lumberton, NJ) recorded his second consecutive hat trick as the Herd defeated Liberty University 3-0 in action at Sam Hood Field today. With the win Marshall moves its record to 4-1-0 as Liberty fell to 1-3-0.
?It was a good win for our team,? head coach Bob Gray said. ?Liberty is a team that can compete with most teams. When they had a man ejected, we elected to wear them down and take advantage of our opportunities.?
The turning point of the match was in the 12th minute when Liberty?s Chase Perry drew a red card for violent conduct and was ejected from the match. Marshall took advantage of the extra man to help Carmichael become the first person in school history to record consecutive hat-tricks.
The first goal came in the 9th minute of the match when Marshall?s Brent Sobczak (Brandon, FL) tapped the ball to Carmichael, who then chipped the ball over charging Liberty goal keeper Dean Short and into the net. The Sobczak to Carmichael connection continued in the 45th minute when Carmichael again put the ball in the back of the net, a goal that looked identical to the first. Carmichael closed his hat trick in the second half when he took a ball from Chris Donovan (Lexington, KY) and single-handedly beat three defenders to give Marshall the winning margin.
The Thundering Herd travel to Miami, Florida to participate in the Florida International Tournament. They take on the UCF Golden Knights on Friday, Sept. 21 at 5:00 p.m. They close out the tournament with a game against host FIU Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
