HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Tamar Slay scored 27 points, 15 of which came in the game?s first five minutes, to lead the Thundering Herd to a 97-75 win over visiting Eastern Michigan in Mid-American Conference basketball action Saturday.
Marshall (8-6 overall, 3-2 in the MAC) established the lead early and cruised to the victory thanks to Slay?s deadly accuracy early on. The six-foot-nine guard connected on his first five shots of the game, including three three-pointers, helping the Herd establish a nine point advantage at the 16-minute mark of the first half that Marshall would never relinquish.
Slay was not the only Thundering Herd player to have an exceptional night from the floor. Senior center J.R. VanHoose hit 8 of 10 shots from the floor to score 16 points. Senior forward Latece Williams connected on 8 of 8 shots and was three of three at the line for 19 points, and sophomore guard Ronald Blackshear hit for 20 points, 18 of which came in the second half. VanHoose led all rebounders with 10 boards, giving him his 46th career double-double.
For the game, Marshall shot a season-high 61.7% from the floor and out-rebounded Eastern Michigan 35-28. The Eagles shot 44.3% from the field.
EMU (5-11, 1-4 in the MAC) was led by Poca, West Virginia natve Ricky Cottrill. The 6-3 sophomore guard scored a game-high 32 points on 10 of 22 shooting and dished out five assists. Beckley native, and EMU freshman guard, Michael Ross led the Eagles with six assists.
Marshall now travels to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan to take on Central Michigan in a cross-divisional MAC match up slated for Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
