Ohio Takes Out Marshall In Three Games

11/6/2002

Athens, Ohio--The Marshall volleyball team dropped to 17-8, 8-4 in MAC play Wednesday night after a 3-0 (28-30, 25-30, 17-30) loss to the Ohio Bobcats (20-7, 10-3 MAC). Ohio avenged an earlier loss to the Thundering Herd a month ago.

?We had every opportunity to win games 1 and 2, which could have made a difference in the match? said Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs. ?We played to not lose instead of to win. Hopefully, we can get it turned around to make it in the MAC tournament.?

Ohio took game one in a furious rally towards the end of the set. Marshall led for all of game one until the Bobcats took the lead 29-28 behind excellent serving by Ohio?s Briana Adamovsky. They took the final point on a Laura Hageman kill to take game one.

Game two started exactly like the first, until Ohio scored three unanswered points to make the score 13-10. MU battled back, and in the 41st point, the Herd took a 21-20 lead. Marshall held on until Ohio put down a kill to take the lead 25-24. The Bobcats then scored five out of the next six point to close out the game 30-25.

The Bobcats took out the Herd 30-17 rather easily in the third and final game. Ohio ran off five in a row to give the Bobcats a comfortable 12-5 lead midway through the game. That was all it took for Ohio, as they cruised to the final 13-point margin.

Marshall was led by Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio) and Nicole Michal (Louisville, Ky.) Sims had 11 kills on the night, while Michal also added 11 kills and a .348 hitting percentage (11-3-23).

Ohio had outstanding performances from Hageman and Holly Schetzsle. Hageman hit .407 (13-2-27), while Schetzle had 12 kills, four errors, and 26 attempts (.308). Ohio?s defense held Marshall to an .048 percentage on the night.

Marshall hopes to rebound in time for their two home matches this weekend against Buffalo and Toledo. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
