Volleyball Upends Buffalo, Gives Jacobs Career Win 200

11/8/2002

Huntington, W.Va.-The Marshall volleyball team dropped the Buffalo Bulls, 3-0 (30-27, 30-25, 31-29), Friday night in the Cam Henderson Center. The Thundering Herd improve to 18-8, 9-4 in the MAC, while UB falls to 9-18, 1-12 in league play.

?We tried our hardest to give this match away, but we found our enthusiasm midway through game three,? said Marshall coach Mitch Jacobs. ?The bottom line is that when you get a win, you?ve got to be happy that you did enough to get it.?

The Herd gave Jacobs? his 200th career win behind outstanding play from junior Nicole Michal (Louisville, Ky.) who had eight kills and a no error performance (8-0-17, .471), and Isabell Anderer (Sinsheim, Germany), who posted a match-high 13 kills and only two errors (13-2-25, .440). Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) also contributed mightily for Marshall, posting a double-double with 38 assists and ten digs.

Marshall took a very close game one with steady play towards the end of the set. With MU leading 28-27, the Herd used an error by the Bulls? Lindsay Matikosh and a kill by Isabell Anderer to score the next two points to take the first game, 30-27.

In game two, the Herd ran off five consecutive points to turn a three-point lead into an eight-point cushion at 24-16 to cruise to the final margin of 30-25.

Game three was dominated early by Marshall, who opened up an eight-point lead at 19-11 at point 30. Buffalo picked up some momentum from that point forward, and eventually took the lead 29-27 when Amber Sims? attack attempt sailed wide. However, Stein, who had four service aces on the night, served Marshall to the next four points to take the game and the match.

Buffalo was paced by Alexis Bouie, who had the only double-digit kill performance on the night for the Bulls with ten.

Marshall takes on Toledo tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the Cam Henderson Center. Admission is free.
