Baseball Drops Series Finale to Winthrop, 12-0
2/10/2002
ROCK HILL, S.Car.?Winthrop University cruised past Marshall University, 12-0, in the series finale at Winthrop Ballpark. With the victory, Winthrop moved to 2-0 on the season while Marshall fell to 0-2.
"We just did not come ready to play today," head coach Dave Piepenbrink said. "When you walk nine batters, hit four more, and commit a couple of errors, there just are not many games you are going to win, especially against teams as good as Winthrop."
Winthrop got all the scoring they needed in the second inning. The Eagles got on the board when Stas Swerdzewski scored on a double by Conrad Funk. After an error advanced Funk to third, he was able to score on a passed ball.
The next inning, Winthrop added three more runs to put the game away. The Eagles loaded the bases with nobody out after a single, a walk and a hit batsmen. Todd Leathers scored on a Todd Friedman ground out to make the score 3-0. Then, Swerdzewski was able to come home on a wild pitch and Bennet Stapf scored on a Carlos de la Rionda single up the middle to put the Eagles up 5-0 after three.
Winthrop added three more runs in the sixth, and four in the seventh to make the final score 12-0.
Right-hander Jeff Reeves (1-0) was able to shut down the Thundering Herd attack, allowing only three hits over six innings in recording the victory. Left-hander Rick Suter (0-1) went two-and-a-third innings allowing five runs, four earned, in the loss.
Marshall is now off until February 15, 2002, when they open a three game series against the Auburn Tigers in Auburn, Ala.
