AUBURN, AL ? After taking advantage of numerous Marshall mistakes in the first two games of a weekend series, the Auburn Tigers broke out the long-ball on Sunday to defeat the Herd 15-6 to complete a three-game sweep in front of 2,761 fans at Plainsman Park.

Auburn (6-1) launched four homers against the Herd, including two by senior catcher Trent Pratt.

The Herd falls to 0-5 on the year with the loss.

Sophomore starting pitcher Colby Paxton (2-0) worked five strong innings for the Tigers to get the victory. He allowed just two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two.

Marshall freshman Chris Fritz (0-1) turned in a solid performance for his first collegiate start. Fritz worked five innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits. He walked five and struck out three.

Auburn broke out long ball to get on the board first in the third inning. Pratt got the Tigers going with a three-run homer off Fritz. Bobby Huddleston, who doubled and scored later in the third, added a two-run bomb in the fourth.

The Herd got two of the runs back in the fifth with singles from Matt White and Bryce Woods around a walk and followed by sacrifice flies by Gregg Hiller and Joe Shetler.

Auburn manufactured a run off Herd reliever Brian Shade in the sixth and then opened the flood gates in the seventh. Scott Schade had a two-run homer, Jonathan Schuerholz had an RBI single and Pratt delivered his second three-run homer of the day.

Marshall plated three runs in the eighth. Hiller walked and went to third on a double by Joe Shetler. After a walk, Mike Koitsopolous drove in a run with a ground out and Adam Fairman followed with a two-run double.

After Auburn scored two more runs in the eighth off Marshall?s Sean Smith, the Herd scored its final run in the ninth when Marty Rini tripled and scored on a single by Hiller.

The Herd will return to action next weekend in Charleston, SC, in the Charleston Southern Tournament. Marshall will face the host team on Friday, Hofstra on Saturday and the University of Maryland on Sunday.

Marshall is scheduled to open it?s home schedule on Saturday, March 2, with a doubleheader against Wright State University.
