Baseball Falls to Maryland 10-3

2/24/2002

CHARLESTON, S.Car.?The University of Maryland scored all the runs they needed in the first inning when they jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Marshall University. The Terrapins went on to defeat Marshall 10-3 in the finale of the Charleston Southern Invitational. With the loss, Marshall fell to 2-6 on the season while Maryland improved to 4-2.

?Our defense let us down today,? head coach Dave Piepenbrink said. ?We made a couple of key mistakes and we were never able to get back in the game.?

Maryland jumped on the Thundering Herd early when they posted five runs in the first inning. Five of the first six batters reached base for the Terrapins and Anthony Buffone?s triple of the right field wall scored Matt Swope and John McCurdy to give the Terps a 3-0 lead. After two more runners reached base, Ray Gemmill singled to center field scoring Kyle George and Will Frazier to give Maryland an insurmountable 5-0 lead.

After Maryland added another run in the bottom of the second, Marshall made an attempt for a third straight comeback in the fifth. After Homer Renshaw was hit by a pitch and Marty Rini walked, Ryan Kobbe laid down a sacrafice bunt. However, George threw the ball into right field and Renshaw came home to score. Rini then scored on a groundout by Amburgey to first base to make the score 6-2. Kobbe then came home on a ground out by David Colangelo, cutting the Maryland lead to 6-3 without collecting a single hit in the inning.

Those would be the only runs Marshall would score on the day as Maryland added one in the seventh and three more in the eighth to make the final 10-3.

Rick Suter (0-3) pitched 6.2 innings allowing seven runs, five earned, to pick up the loss. Maryland pitcher Todd Ainsworth (1-0) pitched six solid innings, allowing four hits and three runs, none earned, to get the victory.

Marshall returns to action for the first homestand of the year when they face Wright State University on Saturday, March 2, at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader at University Heights in Huntington, W.Va.
