2/8/2002

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.?The Marshall University baseball team opens the season this weekend when they face Winthrop University, a NCAA tournament team last year, in Rock Hill, SC. The two-game series opens on Saturday, February 9, 2002, at 1:00 p.m. with the final game of the series taking place the following day at 1:00 p.m. The games are the season openers for both teams.

?Winthrop had a very good year last year,? Marshall head coach Dave Piepenbrink said. ?They are very solid on paper. We know that it will be tough and that we will have to execute all phases of the game in order to win.?

In the second game of the series, Marshall will go with left-handed junior Rick Suter. Suter finished the 2001 season with a record of 2-6 and a 9.70 ERA.

Senior outfielder Todd Leathers is the leading returnee for Winthrop. Last season, Leathers batted .360 while hitting 12 home runs with 64 runs batted in.
