Baseball Drops Opener to Winthrop, 11-3
2/9/2002
ROCK HILL, S.Car.?Winthrop University dropped Marshall University in the season opener for both teams today, 11-3, at Winthrop Ballpark. With the loss, Marshall drops to 0-1 on the season while Winthrop moves to 1-0.
"We did not pitch or hit very well today," head coach Dave Piepenbrink said. "Defensively, we were solid. However, we made some base-running mistakes and missed some signs which we have to correct. Hopefully, we can come out and be a better team tomorrow."
Marshall opened the scoring in the top of the second, when a single by Joe Shetler scored Adam Fairman.
However, Winthrop answered with two runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings to grab control of the game. Included in the 6-0 run was a two-run, two-out third-inning home run by Stas Serdzewski, his first of two on the day.
Down 6-1 in the fifth, Marshall tried to mount a rally. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Aaron Amburgey scored on an error by Winthrop pitcher Ben Thurmond. However, Thurmond was able to get out of the inning by allowing only one more run scored, when David Colangelo scored on a double play.
Winthrop added one run in each of the six and seventh innings and scored three in the eighth to make the final score 11-3.
Thurmond (1-0) picked up the win for the Eagles while Marshall pitcher Grant Harper (0-1) was credited with the loss.
The two-game series ends tomorrow when the teams will face each other at 2:00 p.m. at Winthrop Ballpark. Rick Suter will get the start for the Thundering Herd while Jeff Reeves will get the start for the Eagles.
