Baseball Cruises to 11-4 Victory Over Youngstown State
3/11/2002
Huntington, W.Va.-The Marshall University baseball team cruised to their seventh win in eight games by defeating Youngstown State University 11-4 today at University Heights. With the victory, the Thundering Herd improved to 7-6 while the Penguins dropped to 0-4.
?Grant Harper pitched extremely well and, overall, this was probably our best effort of the year,? head coach Dave Piepenbrink said. ?We got several key two-out hits that helped us get the victory.?
Marshall jumped ahead early scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. After a pitch hit Craig Dziedziejko, Gregg Hiller followed with a double to left center. Homer Renshaw brought Dziedziejko home with a sacrifice fly to left. Then, Marty Rini followed with a two-run homer, his first of the year, which easily cleared the center field fence.
With the score 5-1 in the seventh, the Thundering Herd exploded for three more runs. A leadoff double by Mike Koitsopoulos was followed by a David Colangelo double to left-center, allowing Koitsopoulos to score easily. Then, Matt White made it three doubles in a row, when his drive to left-center allowed Colangelo to score. Hiller?s two-out single scored White, extending the lead to 8-1.
After Youngstown State tallied a run in the eighth, Marshall scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning. The highlight was a two-run home run by Colangelo over the left field wall.
The Penguins scored two runs in the ninth to make the final score 11-4.
Grant Harper pitched eight innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, to even his record at 2-2 on the season. Brumit took the loss for Youngstown State, allowing four runs in four innings of work.
The series concludes tomorrow at University Heights, when the teams will square off at 2:00 p.m.
