Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Toledo

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Toledo today at University Heights. Toledo took the first game, winning 15-5. Marshall rebounded in the second game, defeating the Rockets 8-5. With the split, Marshall moves to 8-10 on the season, 1-1 in the conference, while Toledo improves to 2-11, 1-1 in the conference.
Toledo jumped out to an early lead in the first game by taking a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second. However, Marshall was able to put four on the board in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Aaron Amburgey doubled with the bases loaded to bring home Bryce Woods and Gregg Hiller. David Colangelo made it back-to-back doubles when his drive scored Amburgey and Ryan Kobbe.
The Rockets were able to grab control of the game, however, by outscoring the Thundering Herd 11-1 the rest of the way. Toledo scored five runs in the third, four in the fifth and two more in the seventh to win 15-5.
Jarrod Resendez led the Rocket attack, going five for five with three runs and three RBI?s. J.D. Foust also contributed to the victory, going two for four with two runs and four RBI?s.
Aaron Amburgey led the Thundering Herd attack, going one for three with a run scored and three RBI?s.
Nick Szczur picked up the complete game victory for the Rockets, allowing seven hits and five runs. Aaron Smith took the loss for Marshall, allowing six runs over 2.2 innings.
Marshall was able to earn a split with the Rockets after an 8-5 victory in the second game. After falling behind 3-0 early, Marshall was able to rally. In the bottom of the second, Hiller followed a lead-off single by Clay DeSantis with a two-run homer that easily cleared the center field wall. An RBI single by Colangelo tied the game at 3-3.
With the score tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Marshall was able to take the lead for good. Hiller hit a double to right field to score Matt White and DeSantis. A single by Homer Renshaw scored Hiller to give the Thundering Herd a 7-4 lead.
From there, Marshall allowed only one more Rocket run and was able to cruise to an 8-5 victory.
Hiller went two for four in the game, with two runs and four RBI?s. DeSantis also helped the balanced attack by going three for four with three runs and a RBI.
Chris Fritz picked up the victory for Marshall, allowing four runs in 5.2 innings. Brian Shade retired the side in the ninth to record his first save of the season. Kris Barnswell picked up the loss for the Rockets.
Marshall will return to action on Wednesday, March 27, when they take on Eastern Kentucky University.
