Baseball Drops Series Opener to Buffalo 7-2
3/29/2002
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall University baseball team fell to the University at Buffalo 7-2 today in the opener of a four game series this weekend. With the loss, the Thundering Herd falls to 8-12 on the year, 1-2 in conference. The Bulls move their record to 6-7, 1-0 in the conference.
The game started out as a pitcher?s duel, with the scored tied at 1-1 heading into the seventh inning. Both runs came in the second inning as Marshall got on the board first when a double by Ryan Kobbe brought home Joe Shetler. The Bulls answered in the bottom of the inning when a sacrifice fly by Phil VanHorne scored Corey Blair.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Buffalo was able to put three runs across the plate and take a 4-1 lead. The Bulls extended the lead in the eighth by adding three more runs to make the score 7-1.
The key hit in the Bulls spurt was a three run home run by Bryan Sanchez.
A home run in the ninth by Marshall?s Gregg Hiller, his seventh of the season, was not enough for the Thundering Herd as they fell 7-2.
Marshall out-hit the Bulls throughout the game, however, hitting into six double plays hampered the Thundering Herd.
Tyler Balentine (2-0) got the complete game victory for the Bulls allowing 11 hits and two runs, one earned. Aaron Smith (0-2), who pitched 6.2 innings allowing five hits and three runs, took the loss.
The series will continue with a double header Saturday, March 30, starting at 1:00 p.m. Marshall will be the home team for the first game and the visitors for the second.
