Huntington, W.Va.-The Marshall University baseball team split a double-header with Morehead State University at University Heights. In the first game, Morehead State had 24 hits and cruised to a 19-1 victory. Marshall rallied in the second game, however, and defeated the Eagles 7-6. Marshall is now 13-17 on the season while Morehead State goes to 19-16.

The Eagles scored early and often on the Thundering Herd in the first game. Morehead State opened with five runs in the first and second inning, and added two more in the third to take a 12-0 lead. The quick start was highlighted by a three-run homer in the first inning by Kevin Matuszek, his twelfth of the season. Casey Gilvin added another three-run home run for MSU in the second.

The lone highlight for Marshall came in the third inning. Trailing 12-0, David Colangelo hit a solo home run to left field that made him Marshall?s career leader in runs scored and moved him into second for career hits.

Morehead State added a run in the sixth, and six more in the seventh, to win 19-1.

Matuszek led a balanced attack for the Eagles, going four for five in the game, with four runs and six RBI?s.

Bubba Lavender went three for four in the game, all doubles, and scored three runs.

Morehead State pitcher Jason Keck (1-0) pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits, while walking one and striking out six.

Sean Smith (0-1) took the loss, giving up eight hits and nine runs in only 1.1 innings of work.

In the second game, Marshall was able to grab an early lead. After a Colangelo single, Matt White doubled to right center and Colangelo was able to score easily to give MU a 1-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth, when the Thundering Herd scored twice to take a 3-0 lead. With runners on second and third, Aaron Amburgey hit a two-out single to score Mike Koitsopolous and Homer Renshaw.

Marshall held a 3-0 lead heading into the final inning; however, Morehead State rallied for six in the seventh to grab a 6-3 lead. After Ryan Plank was hit by a pitch, and Bryan Ingram walked, Lavender hit a three-run home run off of Brian Shade to tie the game. MSU took the lead when David Hughes doubled to score Matuszek. The lead was extended to 6-3 when Renaker?s double to center field scored Hughes and Gilvin.

Marshall responded in their last at-bat, however, and went on to a 7-6 victory. After a walk to Craig Dziedziejko, Clay DeSantis hit a 0-2 pitch over the left field wall to cut the lead to 6-5. Marshall tied it when Amburgey was able to make contact on a two strike pitch that scored pinch runner Gregg Hiller. Finally, with the bases loaded, Matt White drew a walk that allowed Joe Shetler to score the winning run.

Amburgey led the way for MU in the finale, going one for three and driving in three runs.

Rick Suter pitched five solid innings for the Thundering Herd, allowing only two hits and no runs. Brian Shade (3-1) picked up the victory for Marshall.
