Dayton, Ohio-The Marshall University baseball team grabbed an early 3-0 lead; however, was unable to hold on as they fell to the University of Dayton 14-4. With the loss, the fifth straight for the Thundering Herd, Marshall?s record drops to 13-22. Dayton improves to 25-14 on the season.
Marshall was able to get on the board first when Aaron Amburgey was able to reach on an error by second baseman Zach Fox that allowed Mike Koitsopolous to give MU a 1-0 lead.
MU extended the lead in the fourth when Craig Dziedziejko and Ryan Kobbe each hit solo home runs to give the Thundering Herd a 3-0 lead.
Trailing 3-0, the Flyers responded by outscoring Marshall 14-0 over the next three innings. Most of the damage came in the fourth when Dayton exploded for nine runs in the inning.
The Flyers started off strong in the fourth when the first five batters in the inning scored. Aaron Reesh led off the inning with a home run to left field and three batters later, Scott Kaye blasted a three run home run to center field to give Dayton a 4-3 lead. A double by Rory Thornton scored two more Flyers and a two run home run by Shawn Bolinger capped the nine run inning.
The Flyers extended the lead to 13-3 in the fifth inning and added another run in the sixth to make it 14-3.
Marshall was able to score a run in the eighth on a home run by Bryan Helmer; however, was unable to threaten again and fell to the Flyers 14-4.
Reesh led the way for the Flyers, going three for four on the day with two runs and two RBI?s.
UD starting pitcher Carl King (1-0) pitched a complete game six hitter to get the victory.
Mickey Plymale took the loss for the Thundering Herd, allowing four hits and five runs without getting an out.
Marshall will next face the University of Miami on Friday, April 26, at 3:00 p.m. at University Heights. On Saturday, children who participate in Little League Baseball or any other youth baseball league will be admitted to the doubleheader for only one dollar.
