4/30/2002
Huntington, W.Va.?The Marshall University baseball team tied a season-high with 24 hits and cruised to beat Eastern Kentucky University 20-10. The win moves the Thundering Herd to 16-24 on the year while Eastern Kentucky drops to 14-28.
?We were able to set the tone early and grab a huge lead,? head coach Dave Piepenbrink said. ?We play much better when we play from ahead and Chris Fritz did a good job of throwing strikes knowing he was only going to pitch a few innings.?
Marshall jumped on the Colonels early and often, scoring in the first seven innings and taking a 20-1 lead.
Several Marshall hitters had outstanding days. Senior David Colangelo went three for six on the day, with three runs, five RBI?s, and two home runs. His grand slam in the seventh inning gave the Thundering Herd a 20-1 lead.
Craig Dziedziejko also contributed to a balanced Marshall attack, going four for five on the day with two runs and four driven in.
In addition, Clay DeSantis continued his hot hitting by going two for three, including a home run, with three runs and two RBI?s.
Marty Rini drove home four runs in the win and Matt White scored three times to round out a balanced attack. In fact, all but one Marshall batter managed a hit in the game.
Marshall opened the scoring with four runs in the first, and added a run in the second and third to take a 6-0 lead.
After EKU scored a single run in the fourth, Marshall rattled off 16 straight runs over the next four innings.
Marshall put two runs on the board in the fourth and four in the fifth, while adding three more in the sixth to take a 15-1 lead.
Marshall went ahead by 19 runs by scoring five in the seventh to make it a 20-1 game.
Included in the scoring outburst were home runs by Marty Rini, Craig Dziedziejko, Clay DeSantis and two by David Colangelo.
EKU was able to score five runs in the eighth and four in the ninth; however, it was not nearly enough as Marshall rolled to a 20-10 victory.
Chris Fritz (5-4) picked up the victory, pitching four innings while allowing only one run off of three hits.
Brad Schmittou (1-1) was unable to retire a batter as he allowed four runs off of five hits and took the loss.
Marshall will now travel to play Kent State University in a four-game Mid-American Conference series over the weekend.
