Ohio Completes Sweep of Marshall with 18-6 Victory

Huntington, W.Va-The Marshall University baseball team grabbed an early 5-0 lead; however, Ohio University outscored MU 18-1 the rest of the way and completed a four game sweep of the Thundering Herd. The 18-6 victory moves the Bobcats to 23-23 on the season, 11-12 in conference, while Marshall falls to 17-31, 7-16 in conference.

Marshall jumped out to an early lead with a run in the third and four in the fourth. In the third inning, Clay DeSantis reached on a fielder?s choice to score Aaron Amburgey.

Marshall stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Amburgey scored Adam Fairman to make it 2-0. Mike Koitsopolous followed with another sac fly that allowed Gregg Hiller to score. Finally, DeSantis singled up the middle to score David Colangelo and Homer Renshaw to give MU a 5-0 lead.

Ohio responded in the top of the fifth with five runs to tie the game. The Bobcats tied the game when Mike Arbinger reached on a fielder?s choice to score Brian White. Heading into the inning, the Bobcats had yet to manage a hit; however, opened the inning with five straight singles off Marshall starting pitcher Sean Smith.

Ohio grabbed the lead in the sixth inning when Omari Briscoe doubled to score Scott Brownlee to make it 6-5.

Marshall tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the inning when Craig Dziedziejko singled to bring home Amburgey.

With the game tied, Ohio exploded for nine runs in the seventh to take a commanding lead. The key hit in the inning was a three run home run by Arbinger to give the Bobcats a 15-6 lead.

Arbinger added another home run in the ninth, his 18th of the season, setting a new Bobcat single-season record for home runs. On the day Arbinger was two for five, with two home runs, three runs scored and six RBI.

Bobcat reliever Aaron Smigelski (1-1) shut down the Thundering Herd the rest of the way, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing no runs on three hits to get the victory.

Aaron Smith (1-4) allowed ten runs in two innings of work and took the loss.

DeSantis led the Marshall attack, going one for three with three RBI.

Marshall will return to action on Friday, May 17, when they face Eastern Michigan University in the opener of a four game series, the last of the season, at University Heights.
