In a continued effort to bolster his pitching staff, Marshall baseball coach Dave Piepenbrink announced today the signing of left-handed pitcher Chris Koutsavlis.
A product of Mt. Lebanon High School, the No. 1 ranked AAA team in Pennsylvania, Koutsavlis has posted a 6-0 record this year and is yet to allow an earned run. He has allowed just 14 hits and eight walks in 38 innings of work while striking out 66.
?We expect Chris to make an immediate impact for us as a freshman,? Herd pitching coach Tom Carty said. ?We are excited about him coming here. He has tremendous command for a high school pitcher and throws 84-86 miles per hour.?
Koutsavlis was a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette All-Star selection as a junior when he posted a 6-4 record with a 1.96 ERA in 68 innings of work. He allowed 38 hits, walked 20 and struck out 84 while throwing nine complete games.
He has twice been named All-Section as a pitcher and infielder, was named the Almanac Advertiser League MVP and he has been nominated for the Louisville Slugger TPX High School All-America team.
Koutsavlis joins left-handed pitchers Fritz Conrad (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and David Goodson (Tallmadge, Ohio) as high school signees for the Herd. In addition, Marshall signed a pair of junior college players -- third baseman Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, Md., Community College) and pitcher/outfielder Scott Henning (Cecil County, Md., Community College) -- this spring.
