Baseball Drops Series Finale to Kent State 13-11

Kent, Ohio-The Marshall University baseball team fell behind early and two rallies came up short as they lost to Kent State University 13-11 in action at Gene Michael Field. With the loss, Marshall falls to 17-27 on the season, 7-12 in conference play. Kent State improves to 30-13, 15-3 in conference play.
Marshall was able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. With two outs, a single by David Colangelo scored Marty Rini and Homer Renshaw to give the Thundering Herd a 2-0 lead.
However, Kent State took advantage of some key Marshall errors in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs and taking a 6-2 lead. Two Marshall errors allowed four unearned runs to score in the inning.
Kent State extended the lead to 8-2 in the third. A double by Chad Kinyon scored Tom Martin and a sacrifice fly by Phil LoCascio scored Casey Ellis to give the Falcons a 8-2 lead.
Marshall closed the gap to one run with five runs in the top of the fifth. After a Colangelo triple, Mike Koitsopolous followed with a single to right center to make it 8-3. With the bases loaded and two outs, Gregg Hiller doubled down the left field line to score Clay DeSantis and Koitsopolous. Ryan Kobbe followed with another double to score Matt White and Hiller to make the score 8-7.
Kent State responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth, and exploded for four in the eighth to extend the lead back to six at 13-7. The key hit in the Kent State rally was a three run home run by Martin in the eighth inning.
Marshall was able to rally for four in the ninth when DeSantis belted a grad slam over the left-center field wall to cut the lead to 13-11. However, Kent State reliever Ben Galbreath came in and recorded the final two outs to preserve the victory for the Golden Flashes and earn the save.
Kinyon led the way for the Golden Flashes, going two for four with a home run, two runs and two RBI?s.
DeSantis led the way for the Thundering Herd, going two for five with two runs and four RBI?s.
Marshall starter Rick Suter (1-7) allowed nine runs, five earned, and nine hits over 4.2 innings of work and took the loss.
Jason Biniker (3-0) picked up the win for the Golden Flashes.
Marshall will return to action on Friday, May 10, at 3:00 p.m. when they open a four-game series against Ohio University at University Heights.
