Burkhamer Named Head Coach at Armstrong Atlantic
6/10/2002
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Jeff Burkhamer, associate head coach at Marshall University, has accepted the head men?s basketball coaching position at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia.
?We are very fortunate to find a new head coach with such a successful background in Jeff Burkhamer to join us at Armstrong Atlantic State University,? AASU Athletic Director Dr. Eddie Aenchbacher said. ?His record speaks for itself at all levels of basketball - college and professional - and we?re extremely excited to be able to harness his talents to lead the Pirates.?
Burkhamer becomes the ninth head coach of the AASU men?s basketball program since the school moved to four-year status in 1966-67. He follows John Marhefka, who left the Pirates to take the head coaching position at Slippery Rock University.
A native of Williamstown, W.Va., Burkhamer has been at Marshall for the last four seasons under head coach Greg White. Last season, the Alderson-Broaddus graduate, was promoted to the position of associate head coach. During his tenure at Marshall, the Thundering Herd compile a 70-44 record in Mid-American Conference play.
?I am thrilled for Jeff,? Marshall Head Coach Greg White said. ?The Armstrong Atlantic position is one that he has had his eye on for nearly a year and I am very happy for him. We wish Jeff and his family nothing but the best.?
Prior to joining the Marshall staff, Burkhamer served as head coach at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Fla., where he led the Saints to two Mid-Florida Conference titles. He earned National Junior College Coach of the Year honors by College Sport Magazine in 1995-96 when the Saints set a school record with 28 wins. In four seasons, the Saints went 97-31 under Burkhamer.
Burkhamer is no stranger to the Coastal Empire area. He was on the staff at Charleston Southern in 1986-87 when the Cougars faced Armstrong State in Big South Conference play.
Burkhamer is married to the former Diane Depler of Stow, Ohio, and the couple have two children - Melissa (11) and Lindsey (6).
Burkhamer inherits a squad that finished last season with a 13-15 record and advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinals. AASU lost its top four leading scorers from last season - all seniors.
?Jeff has been tremendous and he will be missed,? White said. ?He will be very successful at Armstrong Atlantic.?
Marshall will begin a search for Burkhamer?s replacement immediately.
