Herd Baseball Inks Three More

7/15/2002

Marshall University head baseball coach Dave Piepenbrink announced the addition of three more signees for the 2003 season. The Herd has now inked a total of 12 new players for next spring.

The three new signees all come from respected junior college programs. Two are pitchers and one is an outfielder.

?We knew that this was going to be a very important recruiting year for us,? Piepenbrink said. ?These three signees continue the list of new players we have been able to sign, all from successful programs at either the junior college or high school level.?

Steve Ziroli (6-2, 180) comes to Marshall after two seasons at Parkland (Ill.) Junior College. A right-handed pitcher, he worked in 21 games as a closer/setup man out of the pen for a team that posted a 55-9 record and won the Division II Junior College National title this past spring..

He had a 1-0 record with three saves. He posted a 2.58 earned run average in 38 innings of work, walking 18 and striking out 33. During his freshman year he had one save in 14 appearances with a 4.50 ERA for a team that posted a 46-17 record.

?We are excited about Steve joining our pitching staff,? Herd pitching coach Tom Carty said. ?He has a good fastball and an outstanding changeup. He has experience as a closer and has the mental toughness we are looking for on the mound.?

The second pitcher is left-hander Terry Stenger (6-3, 215) from Gulf Coast (Fla.) Community College. He was named the 2001 Panhandle Conference Fireman of the Year after posting eight saves. A native of Mentor, Ohio, he was limited to just five innings of work this past spring because of an injury.

?Coach Darren Mazeroski of Gulf Coach thinks Terry could be a steal for us,? Carty said. ?He came back late in 2002 and will be ready to go for us this fall. He is a strong kid who has proven himself to be dominant at times. We are confident that he will be able to regain his 2001 form.?

The third new member of the Herd signing class is outfielder Joe Glevenyak (6-3, 190) from Royal Palm Beach, Fla. At Daytona Beach CC in 2001 he hit .290 with five home runs and 35 RBI and stole 10 bases. He sat out this past spring but is currently playing in a wood bat league in Sarasota, Fla., and is hitting .350 with 10 doubles, four triples and 14 stolen bases.

"Joe is a player I saw in November at the Florida Junior College sophomore workouts,? Carty said. ?We are excited that he will be coming to Marshall this fall with sophomore eligibility. He is a strong, athletic kid with a solid arm and potential power at the plate.?
