Baseball Signs Another For The Spring of 2003

7/16/2002

Huntington, w. va.--Marshall University Baseball Coach Dave Piepenbrink announced the signing of Richard Russell, a 6?3, 220 pound catcher from North York, Ontario, Canada, to a National Letter of Intent. Russell becomes the 13th signee for the Thundering Herd to sign for competition in the spring of 2003.

Russell skipped playing baseball in high school, opting for play with Team Ontario instead. In two years, he had a .308 batting average with 46 RBI?s and 44 runs scored. He also had 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs, and nine stolen bases for his career with Team Ontario. He played with the Canadian Junior National Team in the summer of 2001, and was named to the National Amateur Baseball Federation?s High School World Series All-Star team this spring.

?We are excited about Richard?s signing,? said Piepenbrink. ?He adds much needed depth and competition to our catcher position. He has all the raw tools to become an offensive and defensive force at and behind the plate.?
