Herd Completes First Day Of Work in Pads

After four days of teaching and running drills at less than full speed, the 19th ranked Marshall Thundering Herd finally got a chance to do some hitting on Wednesday.

Marshall put on full pads for the first time during camp for a pair of practice sessions and the results were positive.

?I think the best indicator of where we are will come after Saturday?s scrimmage,? Marshall coach Bob Pruett said. ?We are still in the teaching mode and I am pleased with the progression we are making.?

A concern for the Herd so far in camp has been the number of injuries, but Pruett said the bumps and bruises this year are no different from any other.

?We are nicked up a little and had some kids out today,? Pruett said. ?I?d like to get some of the kids who are out back., but we looked at last year and we had more kids out at this time last year than we do now.

?We have been getting after it pretty hard. I like the way these kids are working and I like the way they are pushing through. We just have to keep going.?

There was good news in camp on the injury front. Junior defensive end Maurice McKinney should not have to miss more than two weeks with a sprained knee. Also defensive linemen Toriano Brown and Jonathan Goddard were both back at practice after missing a couple of days.

The bad news from camp Wednesday was that sophomore running back Darrell Sheppard (Miami, FL) has decided to leave the team for personal reasons.

The Herd will return with a pair of practices on Thursday, at 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Thursday will also be the Big Green ?Pig Out? at Buddy?s All-American Bar-B-Q on Third Avenue. There will be free Bar-B-Q and entertainment for all Herd fans in attendance. The ?Pig Out? is scheduled for 6-8 p.m.
