Herd Welcomes Newcomers To Camp
8/5/2002
Marshall University football coaches welcomed a class of 34 players to campus Monday afternoon to mark the official start of the 2002 camp.
The group included spring signees, players who sat out last season at partial qualifiers and invited walk-ons. The first-year players spent their first afternoon getting fitted for equipment and getting orientation sessions from the equipment room, training room and strength staff.
Among the new players were five offensive linemen, four running backs and four defensive backs. Each position, including special team spots, was represented by at least one member of the group.
?There are some good looking athletes in this group of new players,? Marshall head coach Bob Pruett said. ?I know they are all anxious to get out there and show us what they have. We?ll give them an opportunity to do that for a couple of days before the rest of the team reports to camp.?
The new squad members will go through a series of academic orientation sessions on Tuesday before getting their first opportunity on the practice field on Wednesday. The players are scheduled to practice Wednesday at 8:30 am in Marshall Stadium and at 4:30 pm on the grass practice field.
Practice will be held at 8:30 am and 3:30 pm on Thursday.
The 34 new players will be joined on Thursday afternoon by the returning members of the varsity squad. The team will participate in Media/Photo Day activities Friday afternoon at Marshall Stadium before opening full squad two-a-days on Saturday.
The Thundering Herd, ranked 21st in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, will open the 2002 season on August 31 at 7 pm against Appalachian State at Marshall Stadium. For information on tickets to that game, or for season-ticket information, call the Marshall Athletic Ticket Office at 800-THE-HERD or 696-HERD.
Following is a complete roster of the 34 new Thundering Herd players who reported to camp on Monday.
