Fog Hampers First Day of Northern Intercollegiate

9/28/2002

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Marshall University?s men?s golf team recorded a first-round high 299 at Indiana University?s Northern Intercollegiate and was attempting to make up ground before the second round was suspended due to darkness.

Play had to be suspended at approximately 6:20 p.m. and teams did not complete the tournament?s scheduled first 36 holes of play. The inability to finish the second round is due to a two-hour fog delay that pushed the tournament?s start back to 10:00 a.m.

Due to the delay, rounds two and three will be completed Sunday in the same threesomes.

Xavier University got off to a strong start and recorded a first-round best score of 282. The Musketeers are also currently five-under through the first nine holes of the second round. Illinois and defending national champion Minnesota are currently tied for second. The Illini shot a 280 in the first round and are currently even through nine holes of round two. Minnesota opened with a 281 in the first round and is one under through its last nine.

Illinois standout James Lepp shot a 65 in the first round and currently leads all individuals at six-under par. Marshall is being paced by Brad Tweel and Derek Hurwitch who both shot two-over par 73?s and stand tied for 33rd place.

Marshall?s Drew Whitten is four-over, while Ryan Stewart and Ben Minyard are seven and eight over, respectively.
