Marshall Track Gears Up For Ohio State Invitational

Freshman Jermaine Kelly has stepped up big for the men's track and field team this season. Kelly has assisted the 4x400m relay team to two straight first place finish.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall University indoor track and field teams will get their first chance this season to see how they compare with other teams in the Mid-American Conference.

Saturday, the Thundering Herd will travel to Columbus, Ohio to participate in the Ohio State Invitational. Of the 18 teams competing, seven are from the MAC. Akron, Bowling Green (women only), Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Ohio University and Toledo will all take part in the meet.

Other teams competing include; Eastern Kentucky, Ohio State, Ashland University, Toronto, Central State University, Malone College, Delaware State, Berea College, Morehouse, Dayton (women only) and Kentucky State.

Freshman Jermaine Kelly (Brampton, Ontario) continues to step up for the men this season. Kelly has assisted the men?s 4x400m relay teams to two consecutive first place finish and in breaking a 23-year old school record in the event. The relay team also placed second at the WVU Holiday Classic on Dec. 7. Kelly has placed in the top ten of the individual 400m sprint twice, including a 5th place finish at the Stan Lyons Open.

For the women?s team, the throwing trio of Shani Brown, Erin Compton and Mandy Halsey have made huge statements in the previous three weeks. Compton broke her own record in the 20lb throw at the WVU Holiday Classic, only to see it fall last week to Brown after her throw of 56-feet-5.5 inches. Brown also placed second in the shot put.

The Ohio State Invitational is a one day event and concludes on Saturday.
