Volleyball Knocks Off Western Michigan, 3-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? Three Marshall players registered double-doubles as the Thundering Herd volleyball team upended Western Michigan on Friday 3-1 (33-31, 30-23, 30-32, 30-23) in Mid-American Conference action from the University Arena.
Marshall?s Tracey King (Miami, Fla.), Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) and Nicole Michal (Louisville, Ky.) each contributed a double-double to lead the Herd (14-8, 4-2 MAC) past the Broncos in the first of two straight road matches in the state of Michigan. King posted a 16-kill, 16-dig performance to go along with Stein?s 60 assists and 14 digs. Michal notched her fifth double-double of 2003 with an 11-kill, 10-dig night.
MU?s Nickie Sanlin (Fairview Heights, Ill.) added 14 kills to match her career high, recording a .565 hitting percentage.
Two of the four games could not be decided in regulation, including the match?s opening stanza which saw the Herd take a 33-31 win and a subsequent 1-0 lead. MU cruised to a 30-23 win in game two, but the Broncos (11-7, 4-3 MAC) battled back to steal a 32-30 victory in game three to avoid the sweep. Game four saw another 30-23 Herd win to send Marshall to its second straight victory over WMU dating back to a 3-0 sweep at the Cam Henderson Center in 2002.
Western Michigan?s Carman Malone had a match-high 18 kills while Schea Fissel also logged a match-high 18 digs.
Stein has tallied 60-plus assists in two of the last three Marshall matches. Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio) added five blocks (one solo) to the Herd total of 12 blocks.
Marshall will complete its weekend road swing with a 5 p.m. match on Saturday versus Central Michigan.
