AKRON, Ohio -- In a battle of threes, it was Akron that came out on top over the Herd 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-24) in a Mid-American Conference clash at James A. Rhodes Arena on Wednesday night.

Marshall and Akron both entered the match tied for third place in the MAC East standings.

Akron, led by double-doubles from senior Sandy Lewis (15 kills, 12 digs) and sophomore Sarah Hopper (10 kills, 20 digs), moves into a second place tie with Kent State with the victory.

The Herd, who took down Akron earlier this season in a five-game thriller at Gullickson Gym, was led by freshman outside hitter Jen Harper (Columbus, Ohio) and senior libero Ashley Barnard (Maumee, Ohio). Harper recorded 10 kills while Barnard tallied a team-high 15 digs as Marshall slips to 14-10 (4-4 MAC).

Akron moves to 10-10 (5-3 MAC) on the year.

Marshall outblocked Akron 12-8 on the night, but the Zips held the Herd offense to a .116 hitting percentage for the match, compared to UA's .208 hitting percentage.

The Herd will now travel to Buffalo for a pair of matches in the state of New York.

Marshall challenges the Bulls of the University at Buffalo in MAC action on Friday at 7 p.m. before making the trek across town for a matchup with Canisius College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
