Baseball Finishes Fall Season
10/24/2003
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Thundering Herd baseball team finished up their fall season and is looking forward to the coming year.
The team played 12 scrimmages in the fall and has shown significant improvement in all areas. The offense, defense and pitching have all looked strong so far.
The team has been swinging the bats very well and leading the way with 16 hits in 34 at bats and an average of .471 was junior Marshall Murray (Walnut Creek, CA) . Not too far behind with a batting average of .459 was infielder Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) .
Outfielders Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ) and Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) also had strong averages, hitting .385 and .346 respectively.
Marshall Head Coach Dave Piepenbrink commented on the way the offense has been playing. "The guys have been hitting the ball very well, I was very impressed with Chris Monaco and Marshall Murray," Piepenbrink said, "they are a very tough out for the other team, they struck out only three times in 64 at-bats."
Pitching has also been a strong area this fall for the Herd. The team ERA for the 12 games was 4.29. Leading the team with an ERA of 0.00 was Scott Henning (Wilmington, DE) He allowed five hits over eight innings. Patrick Molinari (Plainfield, IL) had an ERA of 0.75 in 12 innings pitched. He gave up only nine hits and one earned run. Chris Koutsavlis (Pittsburgh, PA) also had a strong season pitching 13 innings with an ERA of 2.08.
Coach Piepenbrink was pleased with the overall effort of the team thus far. "Our team is looking strong, our defense is looking great, they are more athletic," Piepenbrink said, "the pitching has also looked good, our ERA is down and the young pitchers are looking better."
With all of the talent on this team, the expectations are high, but Coach Piepenbrink knows that they must take it one game at a time. "We just need to think about this on a day-to-day basis," Piepenbrink said, "we need to worry about what we can control. Our main goal is to qualify for the MAC tournament, but we just need to take things one day at a time."
