Volleyball Falls to Xavier

CINCINNATI -- Xavier University put away the Marshall Thundering Herd in four games on Sunday from the Cintas Center in non-conference volleyball action, by scores of 25-30, 30-25, 34-32, 25-30.

Marshall (12-7, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) grabbed an early 1-0 lead on the Musketeers by winning game won 30-25, but Xavier bounced back to win game two by the same score. XU registered the match's highest one-game hitting percentage in the second stanza, attacking at a .395 clip.

Overall, Xavier finished with a .321 team hitting percentage to Marshall's .244 percentage.

The Herd could not convert on a multiple game-point advantage in the third game, allowing Xavier to come back to force bonus volleyball and take an eventual 34-32 win as well as a 2-1 match lead.

Xavier (7-9, 1-1 Atlantic-10) was lead by Asyn Bjorklund's match-high 16 kills and a double-double by Marisa Main in the form of 14 kills and 47 assists.

The Herd's Nicole Michal (Louisville, Ky.) led Marshall with 14 kills (.379 hitting percentage) while Ashley Barnard (Maumee, Ohio) gathered the match's highest dig total with 17. Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio) tallied five service aces and eight kills.

The Thundering Herd will not play any mid-week matches prior to their two-match MAC homestand next weekend. MU will play host to the Ball State Cardinals at 6 p.m. on Friday before battling Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Both matches versus the West Division representatives will take place at the Gullickson Hall Gym, admission is free.
