Herd Volleyball Upends Bowling Green, 3-1

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall volleyball team exploded in Saturday?s game four versus Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green, dominating the Falcons to the tune of a 30-18 match-winning performance to snap a two-game losing skid and hand BGSU its fourth straight loss. Marshall won by scores of 30-28, 23-30, 30-23, 30-18.
The Thundering Herd (16-12, 6-5 MAC) was led by the double-double efforts of Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.), Tracey King (Miami, Fla.), Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio) and Nicole Michal (Louisville, Ky.). Stein, MU?s sophomore setter, assisted on 47 Herd points and added 11 digs. King had a team-high 12 kills to go along with 12 digs and Sims posted 11 kills with 10 blocks. Finally, Michal, a senior, recorded an 11-kill, 11-dig night.
Stein served for three and four-point Herd runs during Marshall?s stellar game four performance, while Sims and Nickie Sanlin (Fairview Heights, Ill.) posted four kills in the stanza. King led all Herd spikers with six kills in game four. The Herd registered a total of seven blocks in the decisive game.
?Tonight was the best blocking night we?ve ever had,? Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said.
Marshall outblocked the BGSU 20-9.
Herd assistant coach Greg Spector enjoyed the team?s effort, especially in game four. ?I think we saw a sparkle of what we?re hoping to see more of. We need to find that and be consistent with it.?
Bowling Green (11-14, 3-8 MAC) received a match-high kill effort of 14 kills from Taylor Twite.
The Herd held the Falcons to a .058 hitting percentage while hitting at a .142 clip themselves.
Marshall will play its next three matches on the road, beginning with a trip to take on the MAC-leading Ohio Bobcats on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
