Herd Volleyball to Face Central Michigan in MAC Quarterfinals
11/20/2003
The Marshall University volleyball team is looking to advance to its first-ever Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal match as the Thundering Herd prepares to do battle with the Central Michigan Chippewas on Friday at 1 p.m. from Ball State?s Worthen Arena in the MAC quarterfinals.
The No. 7-seeded Herd (19-15, 8-8 MAC) is riding the wave of a two-match winning streak into Muncie, Ind., including the school?s first MAC Tournament victory on Tuesday night over the No. 10 Toledo Rockets. The Herd took down UT in convincing fashion, 3-0, at the Cam Henderson Center.
Central Michigan won the MAC?s West Division for the first time in school history, earning the second seed in the tournament. The Chippewas (18-12, 11-5 MAC) upended Marshall on Oct. 18 by a 3-2 final score in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
?Central is a very good team that will not just give you points,? head coach Mitch Jacobs said. ?You have to play to win, which is exactly how it should be at tournament time.?
Marshall is led by 2003 all-MAC honorable mention selection Nicole Michal (Louisville, Ky). The senior leads the Herd with a career season-high 350 kills and a steady .304 hitting percentage, which ranks fifth in the conference.
Central Michigan has three all-conference performers on its championship roster, including senior setter Shaleene Glombowski, who garnered first-team all-MAC honors and junior outside hitter Emily Lovejoy who received second-team all-MAC recognition. CMU also boasts the newly named MAC Freshman of the Year in middle hitter Meghan Moore, who was also chosen as an all-MAC second team selection this season.
The winner of the Marshall-Central Michigan match move on to face the winner of No. 3 Akron/No. 6 Northern Illinois matchup on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Akron and NIU will follow the MU/CMU match at 3 p.m. on Friday.
