Track Teams Head Into MAC Championships With Strong Contenders

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.?The Marshall University tack and field teams will travel to Kent, Ohio Friday for the Mid-American Conference Championships this weekend. The teams are going into the championships on some strong momentum, after breaking four school record and scoring 18 top ten finishes last weekend at the Scarlet and Gray Invitational.
The throwing pair of Shani Brown and Erin Compton looks to challenge for championships in their respective events. Brown broke the school record in the 20 pound weight throw three times this season. Her throw of 58-feet-02.5 inches is the fourth best distance this season in the MAC. Brown also looks to challenge for a MAC Championship in the shot put. Her record setting distance of 44-feet last weekend is the 6th best in the conference.
Senior Erin Compton also looks to challenge for a MAC title in the 20 pound weight throw. Compton broke the school record at the WVU Holiday Classic to start the season. Her throw of 55-04.75 at the Scarlet and Gray Invitational is the 7th best in the MAC.
Other women athletes looking to challenge for MAC Championships are Misha Piper, who holds the 8th best time in the 60m dash this season. Piper ran a time of 7.83 at the WVU Classic. Sophomore Stephanie Eastman looks to challenge for a MAC Championship in the 800m run and the mile. Eastman broke two school records in as many weeks in the 1,000m and the 600m.
For the men, the men?s 4x400m relay team looks to challenge for a MAC title. The relay team has finished first in four events. The relay team?s time of 3:16.6 at the Doug Raymond Invitational is the 5th best time in the conference.
Junior Terry Stahl also is in contention for a MAC title after his throw of 57-07.5 at Columbus this past weekend marked the 5th best in the conference. Stahl has also broken the school record twice in the event.
The MAC Championships begin Friday and conclude on Saturday. Marshall?s only MAC individual indoor champions were Tara Lee (60H) and James Kneeland (800m).
