The 2003 class of Marshall football signees provides the Herd with a solid mix of high school and junior college players, as well as talent from the state of West Virginia and beyond.
Marshall head coach Bob Pruett is optimistic about the potential this class will bring to campus.
?We are excited about the players who have signed to join the Marshall program,? Pruett said. ?As always, we focused our efforts on areas of immediate concern while, at the same time, looking for the best overall athletes available. I think we addressed some of our needs and signed some players who appear to be very athletic.?
Among the 18 players to officially sign on the first day of the signing period were four players who are already enrolled at Marshall and are eligible to participate in spring practice. Those players include junior college transfers Earl Charles, Tremel Guillory and Lonnie McCowan along with high school signee Terick Thomas from H.D. Woodson High in Washington D.C., the same school that produced Marshall?s former record-setting quarterback Byron Leftwich, as well as former All-Conference defensive lineman Giradie Mercer.
The class includes a mix of linemen, skill position players and a kicker. Several of the players will be looked at on both sides of the ball come August.
The class also covers a geographic spectrum, with three signees from West Virginia, two each from Ohio and Tennessee and one each from California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, Ontario, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
As many as three other players are expected to sign and return National Letters of Intent, including another in-state prospect. Marshall is also expected to bring in a number of invited walk-ons this fall.
